Throwing a successful party might seem easy at first, but it is just as easy to royally mess up. The devil really is in the details, and there are hundreds of details that need to be organized before the big day. If you don’t have extensive party planning experience, you could end up ruining the entire party for you and all your guests.
So if you’re new to the world of party planning, whether you’re planning a winter wedding or a corporate holiday party, it’s important to create a detailed checklist. Be sure to remember to provide the following essentials when planning your next party:
It might not sound like an important detail, but forgetting snacks is a surefire way to bum everybody out at the party. You can serve the best food in the world as the main course, but if people don’t have something to munch on over small talk beforehand, there will be an awkward feeling throughout the party. Whether you ask your caterer to provide fancy hors d’oeuvres or you provide chips and salsa, a snack table gives early birds some place to gather as the party starts.
For the same reasons, you absolutely need to serve beverages during your party. Most catering companies will also provide drink packages, so be sure to provide beverages appropriate for the event. For daytime parties, coffee, soda, and tea is a fantastic option, while nighttime events usually call for some form of libation.
Perhaps the most important aspect of any party is the main course. Make sure that you accommodate for everyone’s dietary restrictions, within reason (allergies, vegetarian, vegan, etc.). When possible, you should ask the caterer for a taste test beforehand so you can make sure that it’s up to your standards.
Tables, Chairs, and Linens
While some venues will be able to provide their own chairs, linens, and tables, assuming that these essentials will be provided is extremely dangerous. Chair and table renting is an excellent decision for any party, and you should try and arrange this as soon as you have a venue and guest list. For more upscale events, linen rentals can be customized to match the decor and theme of your event. Don’t try and supply all the party accessories yourself; finding a good table renting company can take a lot of stress off of your shoulders.
Plates, Glasses, Silverware, and Napkins
Everything we’ve mentioned so far has been completely reliant on plates, cups, silverware, and (for cleanup) napkins. While everyone will still enjoy themselves if you run out of napkins, it will certainly be a much messier party than anticipated. Check with your caterer or table rentals company to ensure your guests will have everything they need during the event.
Make sure you’re not forgetting these necessary party items, and for party planners on a tight budget, do your best to rent as much as you can.
